confessions of an (airheaded) mugger

Bet you thought this was going to be witty. But in the interest of Internet safety and all that jazz, I shall refrain from divulging highly sensitive information, including age, telephone number, and weight. I guess a name is ok though; how else will you know it's me? (But seriously, kids, don't talk to strange old men on the Internet)
I do adore owls though. But you already knew that so I guess that's ok too.

Hmm. Apparently someone wants to know "who I am".

In any other time, this would call for a long soliloquy on existential philosophy on my tagboard, but since there are other cheem people (nudge nudge wink wink Xinyuan) who read my blog and like philo...

And besides, you'd think that the massive loads of information provided in my profile would have told the person anyway, so I shall be somewhat content with providing an equally dumb answer.

--

Today Mr Ho came up to me when I was poking at the new carpet in the general office curiously, and told me that there was a programme that was like WEP, but requires IT skills and is organised by the GE Branch. Would I be interested?

HELL YEAH.

So he told me to go find Ms Christin Tan, who resides in a little office in the Career Guidance Centre.

Thus after school, I went to the Career Guidance Centre with Crystal to look for Ms Tan. The huge glass doors with a little cheery sign saying "OUR DOORS ARE ALWAYS WIDE OPEN!" greeted me again, same as the last time we went there. A couple of rattles proved it to be locked, as usual.

We decided that if we were hormonal, troubled teens, a locked counsellor's office wouldn't do much good and we'd go commit suicide, or get pregnant, or slit our wrists, or engage in other seemingly random acts of self-harm.

But hm, I went home and checked the MOE's webpage in order to find out what was the programme which was like WEP, but required IT skills (curious mah) To my absolute horror, it could be:
1. Applied Science Programme (ASP) (I have no idea what Applied Science is, but it sounds cheem.)

2. Defence Science Programmme (DSP) (Ohman what if it's this and I go to DSO/DSTA only to find out that pw&zhenghao/Daniel are my mentors o.O)

3. Institute for Infocomm Research Mentorship Programme (I2R MP) (Sounds... promising.)

4. Institute of High Performance Computing Mentorship Programme (IHPC MP) (OHMAN IF THIS WERE IT, I WOULD TOTALLY... uh, BE SO HAPPY! Heh.)

5. Nanyang Poly Explorations in Science & Technology (NEST) (LOL NEST!)

6. NUS-Computer Mentorship Programme (NUS-CMP) (OOOOOOH.)

One of 7. Then again it could be something else entirely, like Creative Computing Programme or something obscure not listed on the webpage. I think DSP and the IHPC MP thing would be quite cool.

But, you know, it's like so awesome to be offered WEP. Even if it's not WEP per se, but something LIKE WEP. Still awesome. I hope it's fun :D

OHMYGOD FACEBOOK SUCKS.

I logged in, painstakingly edited all my photos, tagged everyone, and finally clicked "save changes" with a sense of satisfaction.

I had bloody cute captions and funny tags and everything!

And then after I clicked that button, it told me to relogin.

So I did.

ONLY TO FIND THAT ALL MY HARD WORK WAS GONE. GONE GONE GONE. AHHHHHHHHHHH.

Facebook sucks.

If you're in my photos, tag yourself. I'm too lazy to do anything now. Blame Facebook for it. RAWR.

2:56 PM
class reunionszxszxs

I got another day off on account of the weird toddler disease.

Instead of coding, I was flipping through photos on Facebook, since Jingyi had tagged me in quite a few of them and I wanted to see how unglam I looked. D:

Woohoo recollections! :D If this were a primary school compo, I'd insert a memorized line about how in a rush of colours, all the memories came flooding back. But since I'm expected to have grown out of such childish undertones, I shall just skip the whole cheesy line part and just gush about 6GE06 :)

I miss the old days during PSLE ten-year-series mugging! Wendy and I'd race to finish the papers and then Jingyi and Edward would just copy our answers. Sneeeeaky. But it worked :D Haha and then we always got alot of answers correct because Wendy is gay and clever :) Then we'd spend the rest of the block staring out the window at the block opposite, trying to look out for the sniper!

I think the sniper was this old woman or this fat potbellied uncle. We used to make up stories about how the fat potbellied uncle actually had a huge store of rifles in his house and one day he'd lean out the window and shoot Kevin. Then we'd scare Kevin with those stories.

Ah, the good old days of peering into HDB flats for snipers.

Anyway we did that same thing too during class reunion! :D Except that we didn't peer into HDB flats for snipers. We all stood in a row outside Edward's house and tried to see in through the trees and attract someone inside the house's attention. When that (obviously) didn't work we called Ed.
Us: "Hello Ed! We're outside your house!"
Ed: "...I'm not at home la dumbasses."

Hehe then after that when we went to Celine's backyard for the BBQ/potluck, we kept peering over into the house opposite. The owners were watching Tom and Jerry and to us that was as good an excuse as any other. We all stood up on the bench and started watching Tom and Jerry.

Raveen wanted to climb over the wall and go for a swim in the neighbour's pool ._.

Then all of a sudden Tom and Jerry switched to some stupid baby programme. We were all very pissed and started yelling across the wall for them to change it to something better, like AXN or something.

I love 6ge06 (:

YESSSSS I FEEL A SENSE OF EXHILARATION.

I finally let the viruses get the better of me and I gave creepystalker such a telling off he's just not replying now.

AWESOME!

And then I blocked him so he can't rebut me with "...." (I told him that a normal ellipses only has 3 dots, not 4, and not to be inane!)

DOUBLE AWESOME!

And instead of focusing on how I'm sick and coughing and my nose feels like a tap (I empathize with you, Xinyuan. From now on I shall bring more tissues so as to provide you a constant backup supply if needed.) I shall focus on the Happy Bits!

Like, uh, I don't have to go to school!

And, uh,

oh are you sick?
xx says:

*name censored out since there is incriminating stuff there.

And yes that is what I shall do! I am going to practice programming at home, and blog about my CNY, and upload all the photos on Facebook, and add all my cousins on Facebook!

(Oh speaking of which, my cousin just accepted my friend request about 1second after I added him. Someone else is apparently abusing company resources.)

After I finish my SS essay ):

LOL CNY.

Hmm apparently CNY doesn't hold as much significance in the hearts of those who send out "HAPPY (insert occassion here)" messages as compared to Christmas. I must have received about a dozen of those, including one about tictacs from Keyun. But for CNY, only 2 people smsed me to say happy niu year or have an ox-picious year. Harharhar. Although people STILL do stay up late to... uh, shou sui? Don't know the English equivalent of it.

Then again, the people who wished me Happy CNY around midnight last night always seem to be online very late, so I don't know if they were shou sui-ing or just keeping normal hours.

No one appreciates my personal message D: D: D: I am sad. I thought "the bishan gay wishes all ri boys a happy cny and hopes they will claim their *ahem* hongbaos from him >)" was rather cute!

Anyway the first day of new year-- playing blackjack with cousins and learning how to swear colourfully in Hokkien. I remember when I was still young and innocent (well, innocent-er, at any rate) and one of my older cousins hissed "NABEH" under his breath because he'd lost.

Me: *wide-eyed, curious look* What's nabeh?

All the grownups in the room turned around and stared at me.

Cousin: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. It's... it's... EH CONCENTRATE ON THE GAME LAR!

Sigh. Maybe he ought to have used "basket" instead, which quite obviously lends itself to more convinient and less "I'm hiding something" explanations.

--

Right and then as always there are the hongbaos. Grah what does it say when it's CNY, and whenever I see the word "hongbao" I inadvertently think of the coding problem called hongbao? But hongbaos are cool, yes they are. Especially since I've saving up for an iPhone, which my mum is somewhat against me buying (RARRRR WHYYYYYYYY IT'S NOT FAIRRRRR. It's not like I'm going to use the money which I've already saved up for anything else. Plus hello I am not donating it to charity. I'm not in a particularly charitable mood and all I want for Christmas rarr, for all those occassions where present-giving is the norm, is an iPhone. D:) but I'll find some way to convince her, hopefully. It's not nice D:

I think someone must have told my grandma that the economy was down and not to put too much money in the hongbaos this year. I can't think of any other plausible reason for the amount she gave to have increased 4-fold.

They must have caught her in one of her moods too. When she's in one of those moods, she will go out of her way to make sure that she does the exact opposite of what the person initially told her to do. This obviously pisses all my aunts off an awful lot, but hey, with a freaking $100 note in the hongbao? WHO'S COMPLAINING MANXZSZXSZXS :D :D :D

Trust his taste; it's really nice! So since I AM satisfied by it, I shall do as he said and dedicate him a line from the song! *clears throat, loud dramatic voice complete with dramatic actions*

ROMEO, SAVE ME, I'VE BEEN FEELING SO ALONE!

Hmm I think it'd be funnier if I did it in person because then I could be overdramatic and everything. AWESOME :D

Hehe love my Hougang Primary/Rosyth GE 06 batchmates! :D (which, come to think of it, only consists of myself, Glendon and Bryan Lee. BUT STILL.)

10:08 PM
lion footdrill

Today, for perhaps the first time in 3 years, I sat down with the rest of the non-AV people on the floor of the hall to watch the CNY concert.

WAH, AWESOME VIEW MAN.

That is, of Grace's ponytail. I couldn't see anything much else in front of me (not that I actually really cared, but, you know, it's nice to know that you CAN.) and that made me rather annoyed. From the gallery, you get an aerial view. From the hall? You get ponytails brushing your face.

And since we were all squashed in the hall, I was bunched up as tight as possible to avoid people who were trying to invade my personal space. It was Not Fun.

All in all, I was in a pretty bad mood. For some reason, everyone thought I was going to spontaneously burst into tears and start sobbing the whole hall down, which kinda irked me quite a bit and blackened my mood further.

Since I couldn't see most of the program, I just sat there and thought about programming. I've decided that I shall KIV Treasure until I spot some instructors online whom I can ask; and instead do some easier questions like the NOI TYS. (Yeah. The actual NOI is in fact simpler than the questions they give us. It's mildly scary. Although the entertainment value of the questions they give us does far exceed that of NOI's.)

The only one I bothered to look out for was Angklung's, because I thought Cheryl Chan would be conducting and I wanted to see if I could spot her white hair from my sad little place in the audience. In the end it turned out that she was just playing the xylophone thingy, and since her class (?) had already shouted out "GO CHERYL CHAN" for her, I didn't bother. (: Anyway it was quite nice lar.

After the concert was over I was so deprived of AV-ing that I went to plead my case with Mr Lee. I told him that no one ought to have to sit there, feeling useless and KNOWING that you could have done something, like move the mikes, or up the volume, or SOMETHING, but couldn't because you were confined to a sad little place on the floor. He mumbled something about "now you know how I felt before I was involved in RGAV" and LET ME STAY ON FOR LOWERSEC CONCERT :D :D: D

I was so elated I went around hugging all the microphones I could find. Xinyuan gave me a weird look and muttered "microphonophilia" under her breath rather distinctly, but being hung up on the high-ness that AV induces in me, I just ignored her. If she'd caught me in my earlier on black mood I'd probably have hauled off and slugged her. Not a very bright idea, considering that she would probably have bodyslammed me (judokas lah. All violent one.) but you get the point.

Anyway we were watching the NCC people do lion footdrill. Since they're by default the lion dance troupe, they decided to combine lion dance and footdrill by doing footdrill in the lion dance thing. LOL damn cute. They made the lion march past and then they did that weird low command (couldn't distinguish the words. I think I've forgotten most of my footdrill except the stuff that Mr Z [foot]drilled into us in P6.) that made the lion tilt it's head towards the audience (like in march pasts, you know.)

SUPER SUPER SUPER CUTE :D :D :D I didn't recognise most of the drills, since when I was in RCY we progressed damn slowly, and I quit after awhile. NCC's standard is really super high; the NCC person controlling the lion managed to make it look like super good footdrill despite having to handle a really heavy head. Like you could really see the head snap back and everything.

I was given the title of STAGE MANAGER :D :D: D for lowersec assembly, which is basically just a fancy name for mike-holder. I was running around looking for mikes, since everyone decided that the prefects who weren't talking at all needed mikes, and thus passed them all to them. ._.

So I was on one of my search-for-mikes expeditions when I rounded a corner and saw Cheryl Chan. I immediately chionged back inside to hide. Then Xinyuan la, she HAD to go tell Cheryl that I was hiding behind a wall. And because everyone knows my hiding is damn powderful (I have, on occassion, attempted to hide behind one of those green road divider thingies. Need I say more?) Cheryl hollered after me: "COME OUT VIC, I SAW YOU."

Note to self: must improve hiding skills.

OMG more pseudo-programming maths today.

Ms Sia finally finished explaining the formula for standard deviation and while I was questioning her about the whole "having-to-compute-the-mean" everytime it runs thing, (Sorry. Optimization, DP, and memoization [yup, it's not a spelling error, don't bother trying to point it out.] have just addled my whole brain.) she was talking about computers...

1. Having a limited amount of memory space, so you can't declare a few trillion decimal places (you can, but it'll eat up all your RAM and you won't be able to play DotA-- random quote by random instructor, I can't remember who, on the very very very first lesson of DMP. I can't believe I still remember it!) and there'll be rounding off errors, and

2. I quote: "If you know a little bit about computer running times, you'll realise that this *points to formula which requires computing the mean everytime* actually runs faster than this *points to formula which requires computing the mean only once, but with rounding off errors*"

Wouldn't it just make more sense to memoize the mean? ._.

I dunno la. As long as the Math SA doesn't require me to code a program to find the answer, I'm happy. Although actually, if it really did, I would be whooping for joy since it's a relatively simple program. I think.

Is Ms Sia, in addition to being a maths genius, also a closet comnerdgeek? Must remember to ask.

Sigh. Chinese New Year festivities tomorrow are going to be so interesting. Not. Unless of course you count mugging away as per normal without even the barest hope of a Rosyth reunion to brighten it up.

Would it kill the school to give us but 3 hours off?

I have no CNY mood at all.

Maths and programming just seem to have this very bizarre connection. First of all there was that little epiphany I had regarding for loops and summations.

Then just yesterday, when Ms Sia was doing cumulative frequency graphs and making us draw up a table of cumulative frequencys, I looked and it and was horribly reminded of dynamic programming. It's a misnomer, because there's simply nothing very dynamic about it at all. Which reminds me. I still haven't finished my DP problem from last year. In fact, I haven't really had a chance to think about it at all, apart from last weekend.

Today Ms Sia was covering standard deviation. Xinyuan had an issue about "WHY SQUARE THE DEVIATION? JUST ERASE THE MINUS SIGN LA!" so Ms Sia had to explain. At first it didn't really make much sense to any of us, so she had to explain it again.

"Say you have a computer. You want the computer to compute many many many numbers..."

Xinyuan turned around and glared at me. Eh! Not my fault Ms Sia makes so many references to programming right! Not that she does, actually, but I make the links and tell Xinyuan about them anyway.

But even though it was put in my language, I didn't understand it at all because I was horribly reminded of the DP problem I haven't finished since last year, and haven't actually had a chance to think about since last weekend, and completely blanked out.

Anyway Crystal was being horrible and totally insulting programming. The back of my file reads: "THE #1 PROGRAMMER EXCUSE FOR LEGITIMATELY SLACKING OFF: 'MY CODE'S COMPILING.' " along with the accompanying xkcd comic. A tribute to programming, if you must. Yes so Yvonne decided to screech something about it being very evil, and Crystal overheard.

(Sidenote: resting, or having swordfights, while your code's compiling isn't slacking off okay! Well, maybe it IS, but we totally deserve a break! And at least the stickfigures on my file only slack off when their code's compiling. Keyun and I (heh) slack off all the time. And perhaps piss our instructors off a fair bit. But still.)

So obviously I had to defend programming. I told Crystal that it was immensely hard, and sometimes you have to spend ages thinking of an algorithm, and then it's wrong, and you have to redo it, and then you code it, and then you have to spend an equal amount of time debugging it, and sometimes you get so frustrated with it because it's bugged beyond repair you ctrl+a and press DELETE.

SHE DOES NOT RESPECT THE SANCTITY OF THE AWESOMENESS THAT IS PROGRAMMING.

Then again, she thinks that she could outcode Josie if she knew how to code, so... you get the idea.

In other news, we finally cornered Dr Ng and told her about our noble intentions to join NOI and (possibly! Hopefully!) bring back RGS's first NOI medal. However since I'm obviously no great shakes at speaking to people and often get very flustered when asked to field a question, I started spewing nonsense. For example, take this very educational little snippet of conversation:

Dr Ng: Do you remember what personal information they'll need?
Me: Uhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Keyun: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh.
Me: Well, I don't actually remember anything except shirt size.

On hindsight, it might have been wiser to just omit the shirt size bit. Good idea.

ROAR my verbal spelling is also deteriorating. She asked who our instructors were, so that she could go contact them later (interesting random bit: Keyun has apparently memorised all of their emails! :O) and I was like:

Me: "Oh um the first one is Koh Pang Wei. K-O-H-P-E-N-G-W-A-I."
Keyun: "It's P-A-N-G-W-E-I lar."
Me: "Ahh. Right. Well there's Chen Zhenghao also. C-H-E-N-Z-H-N-G-H-O-A."
Keyun: "HUH?! *spells it correctly for Dr Ng*"

In the end I just shut up and let Keyun do all the verbal spelling. Better idea.

Haha from the above paragraphs, I can conclude that the best idea right now would be for me to shut up. (:

I READ THIS EMAIL FROM PW AND IT SCARED LIKE 2455438597134782934 YEARS OFF MY LIFE CANNNNNN.

NEXT FRIDAY?! NEXT FRIDAY?! NEXT FRIDAY?! WHEN IS NOI ANYWAY?!?!?!

(Uh, okay, it's 7 March. WHICH IS SO BLOODY SOON OMG OMG OMG WASN'T IT IN APRIL LAST YEAR)

I'M INCOHERENT YES BUT OH GOSH THIS IS AHHHHHHH SO HYPERVENTILATION-CAUSING. EEEEEEEEEEEE.

On an interesting note, it's one of those things where everyone involved knows what you're talking about, because it's so darn important.

Me: OMG KEYUN ARE YOU THERE.
Keyun: YES HOWWWWW
Me: YOU READ HIS EMAIL RIGHT!
Keyun: YES SHALL WE GO FIND HER TOMORROW?
Me: YAH OKAY!

For people not in the know, "he" refers to Pangwei, and "her" Dr Ng Kai Ling.

(LOL his and hers :D)

Okay back to hyperventilating. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Today I had to go for some reunion dinner thingy with my family. Why is it so early? I dunno. Maybe cause we're awesomely unique.

Anyway I realised that all my male cousins have joined the ranks of formal shirt + jeans. Little do they know I'll be joining them on the second day of CNY. Although admittedly, the younger male cousin isn't so much of a formalshirt+jeans than a formalshirt+skinnies, and he looks a little like a cross between a gangster and a beng. Maybe for his birthday I'll buy him one of those ugly caps which make your head look super tall.

But strangely, the older of my two male cousins looks SUPER YOUNG. It's kinda freaky, really. He's like 10 years older than me, but he could pass as someone who's like... hmm, 17? 18?

Anyway family dinners are always a rather strange affair for me because I don't really talk to anyone in my extended family much. I don't talk to the older male cousin because I don't think he wants to talk to me much. When I was 5 I took his squirrel lantern and refused to return it, and that's the kind of thing you tend to remember.

And today my mum'd managed to force my hair into two ponytails, despite me screaming and kicking and begging and pleading with all I had, and I think it might have reminded him of the 5 year old me who used to bully him.

I don't really talk to the younger male cousin much because he joined a UG DESPITE me telling him OVER AND OVER AGAIN that UGs will result in your demise. But did he listen? NO HE DIDN'T. D: Therefore now he's stuck practising footdrill in front of every single reflective surface he finds.

And the older nephew and niece are obsessed with the younger nephew and niece, so I don't talk to them much either.

Dinner with Vic's family-- a pretty quiet affair on my part.

10:06 PM
wide-mouthed tree frog
Thursday, January 15, 2009

When most of my batchmates are at OBS and therefore are not conveniently online for me to annoy or disturb or just plain spam, my supply of laughisms (humour factor, if you prefer) starts to dwindle.

So instead of making people laugh, I start thinking cheemdeep thoughts which are often rather depressing too. However added to the fact that I have a serious tendency to jump from topic to topic faster than... I dunno, a wide-mouthed tree frog? I have no idea if they jump fast at all. I just supposed that since it IS after all a FROG, it'd be able to jump quite well, having frogs' legs and all.

Ooh. Frog legs. The other day I saw a show on TV about some angmoh people cooking frog legs porridge and then wrapping it in oyster omelette. Ho HUM. Haha. Hum--

Yes well you see my point. ANYWAY. I was eating a cupcake while rather deep in thought (about whether it actually qualifies to be called a fruit cake, when the "fruit" just consists of a couple of chopped maraschino cherries sprinkled on the surface of the cupcake. I think not.) when I saw Cherylchan walk past, and then it struck me that she was actually quite scary, a little.

And then I thought for awhile more on that topic, and I realised that she actually wasn't quite so scary per se, but more of dao and therefore, easily confused with "scary". You know, like when people don't really smile that much and just have that extremely dao face.

Even though, as I concluded after some more thinking, she is actually rather nice and occasionally smiley. Although I must admit that she DID poke me really hard in the stomach the other day.

Then all of a sudden it struck me that I wanted to eat a Zinger.

The sheer randomness of that statement made me laugh quite loudly, and since I'd already been looking quite queer (head tilted to one side, as is customary whenever I really start thinking) everyone probably just wrote me off as a loony there and then. ):

But that is just what happens whenever I don't have anyone to disturb on MSN. ): Like there's really NOBODY online whom I can talk to. D: D: D:

Grah, I have a headache. That's completely unrelated, I know, but I'm a worrywart in addition to being partly loony as well, so everytime I get a headache I worry I'm going to suffer an aneurysm and end up paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of my life. Quite a lot of extrapolation, but that's me for you. :/

Bah. I'm actually quite tempted with the whole "pon SAP and just go for the seminar YAY" thing, but... it'd just be wrong. WAAAHHHHH KEYUN I WANT TO GO LEHHHHH T_T Rarrr I feel kinda bad that I haven't been practising coding for so long, and NOI's going to be here before I even know it.

Speaking of which, I went to ask Mr Ho about signing up and he said to ask some Dr Ng person. Keyun go with me? :) I dunno this Dr Ng person very well, but from what I've gathered from past emails, she doesn't seem especially nice.

Eg: From PW: "From Mr Ho: "Dr Ng Kai Ling is teacher ic of the Infocom Club. She would be our point of contact for the members and will inform you if any of the members are able to attend the course. If the other RGS girls who were training with you are interested, please advise them to join the Infocom Club in RGS. Thank you.""

Well in the end we didn't get sponsored, and therefore they didn't get paid (sorry! really sorry! D:) and we were supposedly advised to join the infocomm club. Hello, as if fooling around with photoshop can give you the same thrill as coding a program and, ahem, debugging it. Plus I don't want to join the infocomm club. ): I hope they'll let us join NOI as individuals independent from infocomm.

Grah headache. I think I'll tackle debugging later, once the pain's subsided and I'm not so poundingly sure that I'm going to suffer an aneurysm.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

The Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) is organising an
engaging talk on "Cognitive Science and Computing" on Thursday, 19 Feb 2009, 2
to 4pm.
If you are interested to attend, please sign up through your science
teachers.
Closing date is Tuesday, 20 Jan2009

Thank you.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

WHY THURSDAY D: WHY WHY WHY!

It SO figures. The one random seminar I actually WANT to attend turns out to be on a day where I have SAP, which is absolutely 100% unskippable except in the case of death, or decapitation. D:

Why, Mr Yang, WHY?

Admittedly it's not his fault as much as IHPC's, and it would obviously be quite farcical to blame IHPC for it anyway, considering that they can't possibly schedule talks around the schedule of one measly person, but STILL.

Sigh. Like Xinyuan said, perhaps I ought to stop wanting so much stuff. ):

7:14 PM
iphone

I've decided that if forcibly made to abandom my trusty K610i, I will only do so in exchange for an iPhone.

Grah, I'd voluntarily give up my K610i for an iPhone.

*hint, hint* :D

I think the whole appeal of the iPhone is how you can slide your finger across the screen a couple of times, then jab at it to pick up a call. LOL. I dunno lar. That's what I saw Zhenghao do about a billion times during programming (OMG still having a programming hangover :/) and it just looks so cool.

I figure it might be kinda inconvenient to have to poke it so much to answer a call when on conventional phones you could always just press one button, but STILL. Slide, slide, jab is so much cooler than just jab.

(HAHAHAHA random bit of information: I was watching MTV in the background while typing this and suddenly all these celebrities came up and said, with a huge flash of pearly whites, "IF YOU'RE NOT USING YOUR PC, HIBERNATE IT!" But I'm using my PC. To research on Gothic fiction. Of all things. REALLY.)

Right. Point being, I think iPhones are awesomely cool. ): ): ):

If I had $1,188 on me right now, I'd go buy an iPhone. ):

Damn, it sucks being 15 and cashless.

But for the record, I'm not an Apple geek. ._. I'm too used to Windows to want to switch to a Mac anytime soon. Although I DO quite like the Macs in the Magic Lab. I kind of get them now, and they don't make me want to throw up blood everytime I touch them.

However in the event that I ever figure out how, I'd like to repartition my harddrive and install... uh, whatever the OS that Apple uses is called. Which I can't recall at the moment.

BUT I digress. iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! D:

Okay must go back to researching stuff for RALA liao. Buhbye.

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Yesterday was interesting. We always end up being full of nonsensical stories at
the end of our convos and yesterday was no exception. :p Pw in danger, heh.
Victoria you went off just before Zhenghao appeared to question me about it!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I ripped this off Keyun's blog. Super funny.

Actually I think I talk so much crap everyday I don't even remember what I talked about. Like I can't remember what this nonsensical story was about.

I remember there was one about vampires, and the mafia, and, hmm. Tic tacs. Tic tacs are a major part of any conversation Keyun and I ever have. (I still stick by my stand that orange is nicer than mint. I mean, come on! Mint?!)

Ohhhh I REMEMBER. It involved a stegosaurus, robots, pixels, binary (at least according to my chat logs. ._. How do I come up with these things? :/)

Hehehehe I love matching PMs with Keyun. (: If Keyun and I have matching, weird PMs, you probably can guess that there's something, with a weird story to match, going on behind it.

windy
Monday, January 12, 2009

Sigh.

If I were an emo, I'd use the wind making my feet absolutely chilly right now as a metaphor for how cold and alone I feel right now, but that'd be stupid, melodramatic, and not to mention plain cliched.

And I am trying to break out of cliches, so that I won't fail English and thus get kicked out of RALA.

But all the same, it's freaking cold and I'm already wearing my army jacket. Maybe I've caught some kind of bug.

Not even Sunshine Surf! (which, incidentally, is my new favourite song after having had to listen to it on repeat for all the hours while working on the orientation video) can perk up my mood now.

I can't work my way through maths, I can't bring myself to do xizi for Jap (I forgot practically everything I've learnt last year and am therefore going to fail quite spectacularly unless I do some drastic revision) I can't do art because I haven't bought my sketchbook yet (tomorrow, TOMORROW!) I don't have the brainpower to trawl the web for information on gothic fiction, I haven't puzzled out what "precedents where FOS was invoked" means, I can't write my zuowen because I have no idea how to start or end, and I can't even retire to the safe haven of codes because I have to debug and, frankly, have no idea where to start or end either.

And even though we supposedly learnt Cantonese today in school, I won't be able to show off to my grandma because, due to the nature of our lesson, all we learnt are phrases to do with cleaning. ._. I don't suppose crying "LEI HOU! NGOR DEI LEI BONG LEI CHENG KIT UK KEI!" would go down very well with my grandma.

(That's "Hello! I'm here to help you clean your house!" My grandma would never let me do that because I'd probably mess it up even more. Go figure.)

And we have to learn Hokkien too, because the people whose houses we have to clean (in lieu of OBS, but I'm not complaining. It is far less dangerous, and besides I won't get blisters all over again. Great tradeoff.) might speak Hokkien.

I suspect I'm going to confuse "ngor dei zao la" (we have to go now, in Cantonese) and "wa nang kia liao" (we have to go now, in Hokkien) and end up saying something like "wa nang kia liao, dei zao liao!" (which roughly translates to "we're scared, we're running off now" in Teochew? Hokkien? Dunno.)

Random bit of interesting but otherwise useless trivia: Cantonese for "toiletbowl" is "see harng", which literally translates to shithole.

Another random bit of interesting but otherwise uselss trivia: In Hokkien, "buay sai" means cannot. Incidentally, "buay sai", with the same pronunciation, also means "sell shit".

Crap, I think I'm running a fever.

8:14 PM
uhh what?

Please tell me Becky isn't one of those "add everyone in my contact list heh heh" kind of people!
Tell me that it's just Wesley who's confused about his gender! (Although, shouldn't it be NY batch 10?)

7:24 PM
Saturday, January 10, 2009

OHMYGOD I AM SO DAMN PISSED.

I was practising my abacus just now, because I have a freaking exam coming up tomorrow and I haven't been practising for the entire WEEK, and then my dad suddenly decided to play the caring dad and psychoanalyze me.

He kept telling me to be patient but RARRRR it's bloody tomorrow and I CAN'T PASS HOW TO BE PATIENT MANZXSZXSZXS.

Okay lar I'm not really mad because of that, but just mildy irritated and grah I want so so so much to pass but I don't think I can make it because like well no one's supportive of it. -_- How annoying.

And then suddenly my aunts and uncle all came in and we had this pseudo family reunion in our hall. It was a very wtf moment. Obviously they all started talking, and some of them are pretty loud, but I didn't say anything because I didn't WANT to be rude, and besides I could bear with it, a little. It disturbed me but I survived. Somehow.

Then they started trying to involve me in the conversations, and that's when I started to get really annoyed. I was like very obviously working.

The worst of it all was when my cousin laughed in my ear. If you haven't heard my cousin laugh before, count yourself lucky. It's loud and racuous and brings to mind hyenas. IN MY FREAKING EAR. WHEN I WAS DOING HUGE SUMS THAT REQUIRE FREAKING IMBA CONCENTRATION. WHICH WAS ALREADY BEING PUSHED TO THE BLOODY LIMIT ALREADY.

Obviously I got damn annoyed and adjourned to my room.

Then my mum started telling me that it's just a small test (It's nationwide.) and if I fail I can just go for it again (I'm 14! Everyone already stares at me when I walk in, considering that most of them quit past age 10, even though they ARE pretty low grades and all. But still.) and it's not a big deal.

It so is. A big deal, I mean. I've been trying to pass this grade ever since I was P5, and if I don't pass it still I'll be like this tremendous failure. I hate losing out. Plus this is so so so SO important to me and I can't even begin to describe the sheer importantness of it. I've wanted to be international standard for years and years and if I don't even pass this grade about NOW, I'll practically never ever EVER be able to pass it. Because everyone gets slower as they grow older. -_-

And I still want to break the Singapore record, which requires me to pass this grade BADLY.

I wish people who don't understand the whole competitiveness of it would stop acting as if they do.

amusing
Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Today Dr Sakhar was on MC (and on the first day of RALA, too!) so we had a free block. Awesome. That makes three today. Yeah well anyway Crys and I went to the library, and we sat on skunks and coded/read Harry Potter, respectively.

Um the "skunks" mentioned above weren't really skunks. They were just these sort of L-shaped beanbags which looked alot like skunks standing on their hind legs, plus they were black with a white stripe down the middle. I tried scaring Crys by telling her if she sat on one of them, they'd suddenly rear backwards and go "poot" in her face.

Japanese today was funny. The teacher kept making fun of Joshng, because I suppose he's just... well, easy to make fun of. At first he was stoning, and so she asked him a question about whether he liked his school. He replied in the negative.
Sensei: Why?
Joshng: *shrugs*
Sensei: No friends there?
Joshng: Yah.
Sensei: Oh. So "kawaisou".
(At this point I thought she was saying that he looked cute and nearly died laughing. It turns out she meant pitiful.)

Then after that whenever Sensei shushed the class, the group of 6 HCI boys in the corner would start going "SHHHHH" very loudly at each other.
Sensei: Eh! Cannot copy my shush.
Sensei: But he can la *points to joshng* because he has no friends and is very pitiful. ):

Sensei: In Japan, people buy clothes for the new year. *points to joshng* Do you buy clothes for the new year?
Joshng: Yah.
Sensei: Have you bought all of them?
Joshng: Yah.
Sensei: Are they red?
Joshng: Yah.
Sensei: ALL of them are red?
Joshng: Yah.
Sensei: ...what does "red" (japanese word for red, actually) mean?
Joshng: ...*shrugs*

Oho then some of them were asking Sensei to explain how "jitsu"(actually) works.
Sensei: Oh. Hmm. Like "actually", *points at joshng* this person is actually a woman!"
Joshng: *smiles and nods sagely*
Whole class: LOLOLOLOLOL
Joshng: *snaps awake* wait, what?

Ahh homework homework! D:

Tuesday, January 06, 2009

I tried reading Cherylchan's blog and almost died. It's all in Chinese, in teeny font, and in fan ti. ):

Actually come to think of it, I'm pretty much phayle lar. I think I'm the only ex-PMBP person who isn't in Advanced HCL. :/

Then again it's a silly name. Advanced Higher Chinese. Speaking of Chinese I totally tripped over my words today during Chinese lor. So paiseh. They were making us do introductions, and we were all supposed to say one interesting thing about ourselves, but I didn't know what to say.

Teacher: What about your interesting thing?
Me: huh. laoshi wo mei you qu. (Teacher I'm not interested.)
Teacher: ?!
Me: eh. dui bu qi dui bu qi. bu shi who mei you que. shi uhhh wo shi yi gen hen mei you qu de ren. :D (eh. sorry sorry. I'm not NOT interested. I'm just not interesting. :D)

My Chinese is getting more and more horrigible. Hu/Wu laoshi would totally murder me if they knew. I feel mildly bad.

But anyway, if you have a blister you should not burst it. It is only setting yourself up for days and days of pain.

8:44 PM
great revelations

Today, the new maths teacher decided to go through 1 week's worth of lessons in 1 hour. Needless to say, I was pretty confused at the end of it.

Then she started drawing stuff like

and I had a complete heart attack.
So between Xinyuan and I, we must have asked her to explain that E-looking thingy about five times. But it was the fifth time that she explained it... that I had an epiphany.
As soon as she filled in the values for the top and the bottom... the image of a for loop popped into my head.
I AM NOT KIDDING YOU. I looked at it, went "Aha! for(k = 1; k <= n; k++)! I GET IT!"
And I picked up my pen, and scrawled across the page of my notebook:
for(k = 1; k <=n; k++){
sum += ak;
}
I'll never have problems understanding summation again. :D
{SIDENOTE}: While checking wiki about Sigmas, I found an entire section on summations in programming! SQUEEEEE!
int i;
int sum = 0;
for (i = m; i <= n; i++)
{ sum += x[i]; }
Well. My code's largely correct, then! :D Awesome! (Wiki's code indentation abit screwed.) {/SIDENOTE}
Yeah but anyway that little epiphany caused Crystal to nearly strangle me with her bare hands later. When she saw my notebook, she pointed a trembling finger at those innocent three lines and demanded: "IS THIS CODE?"
Me: "Uh, yeah."
Crys: "WHY DID YOU WRITE IT OUT IN CODE?!"
Me: "Um. I couldn't think of a way to logically express it in words?"
Crys: "YOU! YOU YOU YOU YOU RALA PERSON! HOW COULD YOU!!!!" *proceeds to reach for my neck*
Ah well. At least I get summation now.

5:52 PM
coding hell
Monday, January 05, 2009

Oh crap why am I practising my coding when I have a freaking abacus exam coming up this Sunday?!

I'd slap myself to clear my mind, but it's already been overly clogged by talk of DP and squares and used arrays, and besides it'd hurt.

Grahrahrahrahrah.

9:17 PM
oh gosh

According to an email I just received 5 minutes ago, they've approved my class transfer to Wednesday! I'm apparently in 3.15. ._.

And 3.15 is in some place called... uh, "Container 3". Ohno.

Even after spending my entire defining Sec 1 year in a container block which they SAID was only temporary (and had stinky toilets that couldn't flush to boot) I still feel like someone's going to seal me into a microwave-safe plastic container whenever someone says that.

And to add to the list of last minute things, SAP starts on Thursday. Luckily my transfer was approved man :D
"First, let us all welcome the new Sec 3 SAP girls.You are brave to take up SAP at upp sec.There are now 17 of you, a very healthy no." -- Mr Wong

Hehehe we're a healthy number! Yaaaaaay! And I'm brave I'm brave I'm brave! (:

Ohdear SAP's Sem 1 module is.... 3D/Sculpture module. D: I hope it's easy. And fun. Actually anything much outside of painting makes me kinda scared, but well. I'll get by. I hope.

On a random side note, 311's timetable is hopelessly convoluted. I'd show you here, but I'm lazy. The only subjects we're having together as a class are SS, Philo, PE, CLE and Assembly (which isn't technically a class)

Sunday, January 04, 2009

Ahhhh I borrowed a book on Java from the library today. I was looking for "C for Dummies" (uh I'm not a dummy. I think. I just like it cos it's simple to understand.) but apparently either #1 everyone likes C, and all the books on C have been borrowed, or #2 no one likes C, and nobody bothered to write books about C.

But I saw "Java for Dummies", and apparently since Java is quite an, ahem, simple language to use, and I've been wanting to brag that I know more than one language anyway, I borrowed it.

I shouldn't have done that.

Anyway, silly me had no idea what I was getting into. Bugged by curiousity, I opened the book... and was immediately zapped into the world of object-defined programming or whatever.

Arghhh. Now I can't code because I'll get confused between C and Java. Nevermind. Will wait until the Java wears off.

Anyway there's no one I can ask for help right now online D:

8:01 PM
oh, well.
Saturday, January 03, 2009

To tell you the truth, I don't really have a specific topic that I wanted to write about for today's blogpost.

Haiz abacus exam coming up soon, and I'm rusty, considering that I haven't really practised intensively since a long long time ago. I'm averaging like 50+, 60? when I need a minimum of 70 to pass. D:

But today I was super stoned, having had to go to the morning class (was waaaaay too tired last night to have gone) and I got a grand score of.... 35. :D

This next week is going to be fun.

Ahhh gosh in other news I'm really annoyed because irritating people keep pestering me. I wish they'd just go away and play with their toys or something.

If anyone knows a good tranquilizer dart that works over sms and, as a bonus point, cbox, please tell me.

Gosh, what wouldn't I give for a few quiet minutes to think and (hopefully) get inspiration about the stupid code I still haven't cracked since like last year. ):

7:15 PM
awesome
Friday, January 02, 2009

LOLOLOLOL.

When Xinyuan and I asked Mr Lee which classes he'd be taking for SS this year, he told us (with possibly a hint of an evil grin) that he probably wouldn't be teaching the GEP classes, and he'd put in a special request NOT to teach us. -_-

Apparently, RGS decided to... hmm. Have some fun of their own too?

Anyway today when our form teacher walked into class this morning, he had a vaguely annoyed look on his face as the entire AV batch sitting around the back pinched ourselves and then started whooping in exuberation.

Then, pointedly ignoring us, he told the rest of the class he had no idea what was going on there.

But it just goes to show that RGS does have a sense of humour after all, if a little bit... twisted. Heh. Not complaining though :D

Apparently, Dr Sakhar is gonna be our RALA teacher! :D Awesome. I wonder who the rest are.

--

Oh. During lesson today Mr Lee admitted that he trawls the net for our blogs, and Denise put up her hand and went: "Mr Lee, based on my statcounter report, there are 5 people who got to my blog by searching 'Thomas Jeremy Lee'."

Mr Lee looked vaguely amused as he replied that he wasn't sure if he was one of the people who added to that number.

Anyway, inspired by Denise, I decided to go check my statcounter too. The results were... well, interesting, at any rate.
-> thomas jeremy lee
-> daniel chia blog
-> bruteforce jappy? (LOL they got my post on programming.)
-> rgps psle 2008
-> rosyth nicole 2008
-> does rubik's cube cause electrolyte imbalance? (WTF?)
-> ms ong rgs
-> munglin (HUH?!?!?!)
-> rosyth gep 2006 celine
-> ms ong rgs
-> mpp vistoria (!)
-> zhenghao rgs (x4 o.O)
-> sarah-wesley writing poetry
-> high school musical stupidity (hell yeah!)

Uhhhh. Don't really know what to say LOL. Except that I laughed really long after reading it.

HEHE everyone got the rickroll thing :D Happy new year present (:

On hindsight, I suppose the first day of school was... I'll say it- pretty fun. :O

9:15 PM
hmm.
Thursday, January 01, 2009

So. Some of the guesses which I've gotten as I'm writing this post right now are...

From Xinyuan: Some cheem cheem cheem high grade piano song.
From Wesley: National anthem! (I found this extremely LOL. You'll see why later. :D)
From Joshyeo: Auld Lang Syne?

(Answer waaaaaaay down below, don't look until you've thought about it! :D)

"Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down..."

They're the opening bars to Rick Astley's song. (: I'm serious. Go listen to it! I'd embed it here but for some reason, embedding is disabled by request for all of them, I think. ):

Well, you've been rickrolled. Happy 2009! :D (LOL wouldn't it be so awesome if suddenly halfway through the national anthem, "never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down...")

800th post, btw :D

11:59 PM
happeh new year!

This looks innocent enough :D

Random bit of interesting and otherwise useless trivia: Identify the song. (:

{EDIT}: Since this is a happy new year thing, the answer shall be revealed at midnight! :D

2:03 PM
beng baby

Today I saw what must have been the scariest thing ever.

You know what bengs look like. They wear loud shirts and have thick gold chains, and are pretty horrifying just like that.

But what I saw was worse. It shocked me. It horrified me.

AN AHBENG BABY. :O

It was a little baby wearing a flowery Hawaiian shirt and a gold chain. Oh, the horror. ):

1:09 PM
