confessions of an (airheaded) mugger

Bet you thought this was going to be witty. But in the interest of Internet safety and all that jazz, I shall refrain from divulging highly sensitive information, including age, telephone number, and weight. I guess a name is ok though; how else will you know it's me? (But seriously, kids, don't talk to strange old men on the Internet)
I do adore owls though. But you already knew that so I guess that's ok too.

3 things I have learned from my jaunt to Boston that are not related to investing, high powered women, or high powered women in investing (though there were certainly interesting moments with all the free flow of wine going around):

1. Californians have no fucking idea what cold is.

The frost in my heart apparently brought a cold front to Boston, and for the 2 days I was there the temperature rarely rose above 0*C, though iPhone weather tells me that it's going to rise to a toasty 12*C as soon as I leave. We in California are wrapping ourselves up in parkas when the temperature dips below 20*C. Wimps, that's what we are.

2. Torture is circling SFO after 3 bottles of water for 45 min with the seatbelt sign turned on.

I needed to pee so bad I could literally feel my bladder trying to push its way out of my body like a newborn baby. We circled SFO for 45 min because of airport congestion, and the ride was as smooth as silk, and the pilot should really have won an award for that, but because we were technically still "going to land soon", the seatbelt sign stayed on and I stayed in my seat and hoped so fervently that my pee would stay put.

3. San Francisco is starting to feel like home.

Incredibly tired, haven't gotten a chance to write at all this entire quarter and the whole summer because there just hasn't been time. 24h in a day, tons of things demanding my attention. It makes me wonder how people who manage to do so many things do it.

People keep telling me not to take no for an answer, to keep pressing on, but seriously I'm fucking tired, and there's a limit to how much more I can do. It's discouraging when you spend 20h on a problem set consistently over the week and do worse than people who did it like  2 days before it was due, and at the expense of everything else in your life. So I dropped it to C/NC, and that's the first time in my life I've had to admit to myself that I was in over my head about something.

And that's what this entire quarter has felt like. I'm trying to put in as much time as possible, but it seems like for every "yes" I get, i get 50 "no"s. It's harsh, and hard for me to accept. I used to breeze through all these applications and stuff. I guess the pool has become way more competitive and logically I shouldn't expect to be breezing through Stanford and recruitment, but it takes a little getting used to.

I will get used to it eventually, I'll learn the way on my own. I guess I wrote this just because I need to get it off my chest to feel like I'm not dying inside. I don't need solutions, I just need support as I muddle through math that's more Greek than numbers, and through recruiting where everyone can schmooze with ease and I'm all awkward.

At times like this I wonder if I would have been happier choosing the easy path of being a doctor or lawyer, staying in my little goldfish bowl.
