my life would suck without you
Monday, August 31, 2009
My life you suck without you (guys)! :D <3 6GE06 and gosh I am sorry I kept referring to you people as Batch10. Tsk. Must improve on memory sigh. I kept mistaking people for other people. When I walked past this NUS guy sulking next to Ronald McDonald on that bench thing I nudged Crystal and was all "Eh I thought Wesley went to HCI? When did he switch to NUS?" and Crystal gave me A Look and was all "That's not Wesley. That's just a random guy who looks abit like Wesley." And that wasn't the only one. I screwed up with people's faces alot too but I forgot whose face I forgot >< Crystal and I decided to bus to AMK library because the rest were annoying and decided to walk. Reached there about half an hour earlier than them and saw a group of juniors outside who fangirled over us adoringly. We talked to them for awhile and then told them that we were going in to see if anyone was here yet, they screamed at us if we knew where we were going. Thinking it was a caring thought, along the lines of "OH DON'T GET LOST K!" we assured them we knew exactly what we were doing and entered the Macs. Turned out they didn't know we were supposed to be meeting INSIDE the Macs and only trooped in about an hour later ._. Gosh I dunno what to blog about already la! Can you just go to Facebook and see photos? Because I have about 61 photos there or something. And everyone knows that a picture speaks a thousand or million words or whatever and I don't think I can beat 61000 words. So, yeah, whatever. Love ALL of you guys :D :D :D

Saturday, August 29, 2009
Eww Shitty just had to go dig up a whole bunch of photos from when 6GE06 was puny and fat. Kerry is round and puffy, and so are many other people. I just realised that I still can't tell Wesley and Shaoyun apart. I mean like when I see a photo of shaocloud I still go "OMG lol Wesley looks so different now!" before scrolling down and realising that it's actually shaocloud. Eheh I spot a rather interesting discussion between Wendy Darling and Celine. Celine: "kay seeyou mondayyyyy. lousy ri boy!" Wendy: "...fine la big already la rgs girl :D" Celine: "I'm from Nanyang." We all look so fat and cute and eager to please. And this is why you can never have a BGR with your primary school classmates. Like look everyone says that Marcus is supposedly very hot now or something, but there's a photo of him where his pants are at his chest and he looks generally chubby and un-hot. It's just incestuous. I remember we used to think that the twins were really cool because they got special permission from the HOD to let them gel up their hair but now looking back at Facebook photos they look very kiddy. And we used to think that we were so grown up. Sigh I feel like we have crossed an unspoken boundary. Now when I look at itty bitty Sec 1s, I shall not sneer openly in their faces and niao them for trying to be cool, because I know realise that they actually THINK they're really cool. Instead, I shall smile in a very motherly sort of way and say, "well, we were young once." GOSH THE PROSPECT OF THAT DISTURBS ME. WHY ARE WE SO OLD, SO FAST?

Finals today was, well, at the very least, funny. I have quotes, and I think Rachel has some too! The first debate was really really funny and even Rachel (who gets really bored easily LOL) said that it was damn funny. Then after that it got really dry, until the last one where RI basically were un-parliamentary. Misuse of Drugs team:Opp: "People will get addicted to drugs, and then our economy will collapse!!!!!" Opp: "The unjust prosecution of a few innocent people is nothing compared to the almost definite destruction of our society." (almost definite destruction of society refers to the statement above.) Opp: "Drugs... are like chocolate. Once you start, you can't stop! -huge grin-" Opp: "What are the chances that hardened drug traffickers will actually plant drugs on other people?" Everyone else: "Um. Fairly high, actually. LOL." Everyone: -wahahahaha- Speaker: "LAUGHING IS NOT IN ORDER." Everyone: "WAHAHAHAHAHAHA" Opp: "It's not the role of the judge to make the final judgment in court." Xinyuan: "I would like to question if Madam Opposition understands our judicial procedure?" NUS Pro bono guy: "I find it very disturbing that the opposition finds our judges incompetent." NUS Pro bono guy: "What kind of mitigation can the judge give you when you have a MANDATORY DEATH SENTENCE? A softer rope? A cushion to catch your body when you fall? HELLO?!" Clarisse Teo: -dripping contempt- "However, I believe that the opposition has been HARPING on XXXX for so long, and... I JUST DON'T SEE THE POINT!" Ah yes special mention ought to go to Clarisse Teo who was one of the emcees. Her "This is just a GENTLE reminder that if you want to enter the chamber during the debate, please enter quietly and go to your SEAT." dripped contempt from every word and hardly sounded gentle. She was, in a word, awesome. Every single rebuttal of oozed contempt and disdain for her opponents. And I think she should totally have won the best audience speaker award for BOTH style and substance, unlike -coughfallaciouseconomycollapsepeoplecough- Opp: "Prosecutors will take into account the mitigating circumstances of the defendant, and won't prosecute him if they deem it necessary!" Everyone else: "Um, it's kind of the prosecutor's job to PROSECUTE. (duh)" Political films:Opp: "Our political stability is like a spider web! It's really fragile, and any slightest jolt could destroy it. The last thing to do when it's still shaking is to shake it even further, cos it might break!" Charisse: "I think the web stopped shaking a long time ago." Clarisse: "ANYONE can get political films on youtube, so opposition, what are you going to do about it? Are you able to BAN them?" -contempt drips- Opp: "POLITICAL FILMS ARE LIKE TORNADOES! THEY CAN DESTROY A CITY!!!!!!" Judge: "Um, overuse of metaphors can be rather... annoying." RI debate:Speaker: "Opposition MP, please wrap up your speech-" Opp: "-NO THANK YOU, SIR. AND THAT IS WHY WE SHOULD NOT BUY ARTS WITH NATIONAL SECURITY, AND I AM PROUD TO OPPOSE."

Do you ever read people's emo Facebook statuses and feel like going "HAH SUCKS TO BE YOU"? Like, not in a nice way, but a seriously "HAH YOU SUCK" kind of way? I was just reading the status of some random person who was moaning about failing SS and wanting to cry and I REALLY REALLY REALLY felt like being mean and condescending about it. Maybe it was the whole want to cry thing. But then after that I felt bad for wanting to be mean and condescending. :/ And I get a kick out of reading emo people's blogs, because sometimes the stuff they emo over is really comical. And then they start trying to make cheem allusions which just fall through, because they end up contradicting themselves like "I'm sad, but I'm happy." or being cliched, like "it's raining. Just like the tears that run from my eyes worhzxs." And then after that I feel bad for making fun of people's (admittedly, rather trivial) troubles. Romanticism is also chock-full of emos, like Wordsworth. He moans about the world all the time, except in the Lucy poems, where he's mad. Like wtf you're on the way to meet your girlfriend and FOR NO REASON you suddenly think, "oh, wait, WHAT IF SHE'S DEAD?!?!?" Wordsworth hates your emo poems, because they're not emo enough -_- -- This is completely unrelated, BUT WHY CAN'T NSC SET MORE DEFINED INPUT LIMITS. I have no idea when or how to stop reading in because it isn't exactly EOF. :/ So I have no idea how large an array to declare. I mean, would it kill them whether to tell us whether their problem sets are going to be in the 10s, or in the 10 thousands? And sadly enough I have not mastered the art of logically deducing how big an array to declare. When I declare an array, I choose the number because "it's big" and not because it's "100^2 blah blah cheem reason". And big is NEVER big enough. Blah I don't like SP.

bananas
Today makes two days in a row that I have received free bananas. Got a goreng pisang yesterday from the instructors. Thanks guys :D And today when Math ended, Mr Y said in a somewhat sheepish (ahem no pun intended) tone: "311, I, uh, have bananas for you." We stared at him and basically went like, "wait, what?" He explained, "Bananas are good for you! If you eat more bananas, your brains will work better. So hopefully you'll do better in your next Math paper." This was one of those things that you don't know whether to feel happy about(because you got a free banana) or whether to start crying (because he's giving back Math papers tomorrow) And then he mumbled something about it being Chinese Valentine's Day, and then scurried out. Aww. I hope Mr Y follows up next year. So yeah, we got free bananas. Which didn't decompose as fast as Xinyuan's one did previously, thank goodness.

My first inkling that RS was not going to end on time was when I noted that RS was half over and that Dr S was still correcting and rehearsing the first speaker's (first speaker... OF THE DAY) speech. Somehow he sped through the remaining three and finished them within the last half an hour. But by then I was already kind of late for programming and I still had to talk to Mr Lee about excuse letters and art. Chionged out of the DVD area which we'd... uh, "swapped" with the people inside (we started shutting the doors and generally taking over the place, and they scuttled out) and saw Keyun and the instructors standing outside. Apparently they'd been booted out of the infocomm lab :/ But the library was a singularly bad place because... it's the library! You just don't code in the library. Or debate and throw tables, but that's another matter altogether. We tried to chase them out because they were attracting stares from everyone in the library, including the librarian, and went up to try to chase Tribune people out of the lab. It didn't work. So we crashed 311's classroom. They gave us a pep talk about NSC and strategizing, and decided that we ought to choose a coder. Keyun volunteered me, so I volunteered her, and the infocomm club person volunteered herself. There was no majority vote so they decided to make us code a problem. It was supposedly a test, but I think they got kind of pissed when Keyun and I kept asking each other stuff because we were so rusty D: They wanted to make us seperate our tables, which led to Keyun and I clutching each other like long lost sisters or something. But PW just grabbed my chair and dragged it with me on it over to another table, which was really freaky because I always thought I was really heavy and no one'd be able to drag stuff away if I just sat on it. Hmm this sounds like a yo momma joke, but whatever. And he managed to drag Keyun, who'd scooted over, as well. I had no idea I was so rusty. I was like, "Eh if we want to write if conditionals, must we have a bracket for the conditional stuff?" They gave me this horrible shocked incredulous look. And after the first few problems we were thinking really sluggishly, and so by the time we got to a problem involving a grasshopper Keyun and I were quite lame. Instead of "thinking about how to solve the problem", we started doodling grasshoppers. Keyun said mine had 5 legs, but it was actually two legs that sort of overlapped. And then we started talking rot like, "Oh this is an important clarification. If the grasshopper only has 5 legs, then it can't hop! Then there's no solution la output zero for all problem sets YAY!!!" They were not amused D: Keyun and I gave them our cards and chocolates after tying them in a 7-11 bag with about 10 knots. We thought it'd be enough to keep them occupied until we'd made our escapes (somehow it feels weird to have people read your cards in front of you) but they somehow managed to untie it within the time it took for them to cross the road :/ Must practise tying more complicated knots, sigh.

flip your calendar
Sunday, August 23, 2009
OMG I just turned the page of the calendar and realised that I have about 3 weeks left to NSC. I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY FAR AWAY. Not to mention a week- no, 5 days left till debate. I realised I haven't posted about the NDRF thing. I was kinda underwhelmed by how it was, because if it were done in RGS style (which is, admittedly, rather over-the-top) we'd have forced people to stay back for it, made it an SSA, and made the band play an overture as the minister walked in. As it is, the participants filled up less than half a hall, and the only indication that was made when the minister arrived was "oh let's rise to welcome the minister person." and some lukewarm clapping. I liked VJC though; my name was all over the place -smirk- Which led Crystal or Xinyuan, I can't remember which, to whine about wanting their own JC too. HAH. TOO BAD. But I wasn't impressed either by the minister's responses to our questions. I asked how he planned to implement greater interaction between religions, and if how he was going to increase awareness about different religions. He assured me that it wasn't going to be a school subject. I accepted this point and asked him what exactly he had in mind. He assured me that it wouldn't be examinable. ANNOYING. He, for a person preaching about acceptance and breaking down stereotpyes, seemed to have a rather fixed prejudice against RGS people, because another senior who asked a question about specialization got the same "oh, it's okay, your subjects are good" assurance. Which I thought was really odious. If he hadn't had an answer he should just have said so, instead of insinuating that all RGS girls are zombie muggertoads. Which we aren't. Not really. So that was that. -- Blogskin changed, if you haven't already noticed! Chose it because it had few pictures, not because I want to irritatingly emphasize my relationship status. I hate it when heartbroken people keep insisting that they're not in love, blah blah, don't care about you, blah blah, happy because I'm not under the duress of love etc. However the irony is not wasted on me when the next day their pm (which had previously been declaring their love-free status) changes to something along the lines of "PLEASE COME BACK TO ME I LUV U SO MUCH WORHZXS!!!!!!!!!" Like my profile states, I actually love loads of people (Crystal, if you're reading this, NO GO ON THE BREAKUP. I'M NOT GOING TO RELINQUISH YOU TO JOSIE SO EASILY O: O: O: [nyehh facebook quizzes.]) and am generally happy. So yeah, whatever. Plus it has pretty colour contrasts. And for some reason, all nice blogskins seem to be lovesick.

derivative <3
"Really? Sounds a little bit... derivative." That is going to be one of my favourite quotes for awhile. Love Newton and Leibniz. Gosh I wish I had a collection of xkcd cartoons on tshirts. I'd wear a different, geeky one everyday. -- Sion has a girlfriend! Her name, according to his phonebook (which I read over his shoulder) is "Pooh Bear". Now as I am sure all of you will agree, "Pooh Bear" is a hopelessly cliched and boring term of affection for your significant other. Not only is it gender-undefined, it also calls up memories of a huge yellow caniform wearing a red shirt that perhaps fit about 5 years ago, who often gets into various troubles involving small holes in tree trunks and bumblebees. And whose best friend is a piglet of similarly undefined gender. I suppose he's male, but with a voice like that... I think Winnie the Pooh is really cute, and I adored watching him on TV/in books, but as far as I'm concerned that's where he should stay. It is hardly romantic to let your beloved know that you actually think of him/her as a fat yellow bear, no matter how cute. I was obviously very understanding and diplomatic about this matter, and broke it to him with as much tact as I could muster, and as gently as I could: "Sion, your nickname for your girlfriend sucks. You should think of another one." People in love often come accompanied with brains of mush, so he couldn't see what was so wrong with calling his girlfriend "Pooh Bear". He thought it was cute. I thought of a whole long list of them for him. If you wanted to go with the cartoon character angle, there were "honeybunch" (spongebob), "strawberry shortcake" (self-explanatory) or "cuppy cake"(strawberry shortcake). From the Cuppy Cake Song alone, there's a whole list. Sugar plum, sweetie pie, gum drop, snoogums-boogums(?!) Disturbingly, most terms of endearment seem to be food. And there are the traditional ones, like "pumpkin"(more food!). Or a slightly more comical one, "doodlebug". And the more exotic: amoroso, bambino, ma cherie, querida (WHEE THE MEDIATOR. HOW SWEET. I pushed this one for all I was worth.) He rejected all of them and stuck to "Pooh Bear". Tsk. Some people just have not an ounce of romance in them.

In a bid to make me love Chinese more, I zhnged my electronic dictionary. Because I am basically the kind of person whose brain fizzles out within 5m of The Pink Shop (I have no idea what it's actually called, but it's really pink and has loads of pictures of Lee Min Ho in front. Albeit a bit gay looking, but WHATEVER.) and begs to be let in (we actually did that today when we went to PS. I fangirled at the pinkness, Crystal fangirled over LMH, and Xinyuan and Denise groaned and did imitations of dying cats. Yesh but now a small corner of my drab electronic dictionary is covered in purple rhinestones, and pink and black Kaiser droplets. LOVE! :D I totally feel like studying Chinese now because of my new shiny dictionary which is so awesomely pretty :D :D :D Oh no I sound bimb. But ooh, I am going to zhng my calculator when I get it back (junior who borrowed never returned it. I am unhappy.) so that I shall feel, uh, even more motivated to do math! :D Although right now I'm quite annoyed because I don't have my calculator and can't do my math worksheets. (You can't do trig in your head.) And everyone knows that a day not spent doing math worksheets is a day wasted. I FEEL CRIPPLED WITHOUT MY CALCULATOR. -- Practised for MPP debate! I am apparently 3rd speaker, and thus doing most of the rebutting. This is somewhat disturbing since I am the perfect result of PAP propaganda and actually believe that "politics" is a bad word. I am practising rebutting people, so forgive me if I get snappy with you these few days. Crystal and I took 156 home and basically talked a lot, as usual. There was this guy asleep next to the both of us, and he was listening to music so loud that we actually made out the tunes. There was a FOB song, and then lots of shouty ones that we didn't recognise, and then the familiar chords of Dead! started up. AWESOME :D :D :D And then we started singing along. Glared at some ACS guy all the way home by no fault of his. He probably thought I was weird.

jia ju
Wednesday, August 19, 2009
I feel like I have sold my soul to the devil. In primary school, during PSLE, I was the only one in the room who did the exam without a Chinese dictionary (which is a story for another time, or maybe it's in my archives. Can't remember.) and I did reasonably well. Since primary school I have openly scoffed at people who think it is possible to mug for compo and go crazy memorizing chengyu and stuff like that. But I am mugging Chinese jia jus now. Because, you know, better to mug now than regret later. Like, 一失足成千古恨,and 未雨绸缪,以防临渴掘井。I am murderously trying to splatter everything I write between today and tomorrow morning with chengyus and jia jus, so that I may score well for a Chinese exam. This is a perfect example of our “填鸭式“ eduction. Tsk, tsk. I do really wonder why Chinese jia jus have to be so dramatic. I mean, you don't just make bad friends. You make bad friends, and fall into a deep abyss of pain and suffering. And the government, society, schools and family don't just work together to make Singapore a better place, they work together to educate the pillars of our society, and let this little red dot that is Singapore shoot out dazzling rays of light on the world map. REALLY. -- Dr S says that the theme for staff night is "black magic". He's going to bring his entire collection of voodoo dolls made throughout his three years in RGS. Figuratively, since he doesn't actually have any voodoo dolls. Male teachers are so angsty. Unless of course you're Mr Y, in which case you just niao everyone around you. I shall present this conversation as a point in my favour: Mr Y: "Girls, why are there so many lian he zao baos behind the whiteboard?" Denise: "Oh, we don't want them. Do you?" Mr Y: "No..." Denise: "They're good! It's good to read more Chinese newspapers! Don't you like Chinese?" Mr Y: "Well, I could take one, but..." Denise: "Take more! You can improve your Chinese!" He visibly scoffed and said in a tone of utmost incredulity: "Do you think I need to improve my Chinese?!" Background info: Mr Y is from China and later on, Hwachong. He made us read "yang cheng hao xi guan" from the Chinese textbook as a reminder to write the correct number of sig figs. And he once sent out a docx file, which most of us couldn't open, and so we asked him (nicely) to resend. So he smirked and said, "Oh, right, I forgot YOU ALL DON'T HAVE GOOD TECHNOLOGY." -whips out iPhone to resend it to everyone.- Well when I get an upgrade to Mword2007 I shall be an annoying prick and spread dissatisfaction to the rest of the world by sending out everything in docx files, and then going "Oh, right, you don't have good technology!" in this simpering, false-sympathetic tone. TAKE THAT. MUAHAHAHAHA. AND YOU SHALL ALL FALL INTO THE DARK, DEEP ABYSS OF PAIN.

My dad is eyeing my chocolates. He's been trying to trick me into agreeing to let him eat "one" (if I agree to one, he'll demolish the whole box withing a day) for the past... I don't know. "Have you eaten your medicine?" "...yes." "Have you done your homework?" "...yes." "Have you drunk enough water today?" "...yes." "Do you know how to do your homework?" "...yes." "Can I have a chocolate?" "...y-NO. STOP IT." -- Watched a bit of the National Day Parade rerun, but couldn't really concentrate because I was working on SS PT ): Sigh that is so ironic. Social studies is obstructing my, uh, demonstrating my love for my country. But I did take a break during the marching, which is a really awesome part of the parade. Plus watching them march, I felt a momentary twinge of regret for quitting RCY because RCY was marching, and I've always wanted to march in the NDP, but that was quickly soothed by Crystal's assurance that RCY in RG doesn't get to march in NDP because they always reject the invitation. Hmm although I do feel somewhat more inclined to join the army just so that I'll get to march in carrying a flag in that pretty white uniform. That sounds like a somewhat sad reason, though. :/ OH today I found the Diary of Adrian Mole in the library. Good old days, man. When Crystal Rachel and I would borrow Adrian Mole from the school library and titter at all the sick bits. I miss being in primary school.

C-litist
Saturday, August 15, 2009
KEYUN AND I ARE C-LITIST :D Meaning we look down on people who don't use C to code, snort. And we have the best excuse for getting people out of stuff. "Um, well, there's actually this other person who's coming with us. Do you mind him/her coming? ...because we do." HOW CLASSIC IS THAT CAN :D I really hate adhoc problems. I can never figure out how to solve them. And I just realised that my Math has gone so far down the toilet that I dunno how to solve perimeter, apart from manually counting the squares O: OMG BOF! I love the gay guy. He's so classic gosh. Gay best friends are the best kind of friends there are wheee. Super cute he just liberated Zhihou's picture with Jandi from Zhihou's wallet and replaced it with a picture of Zhihou and him. And he did this with this totally self-satisfied look. Squee. But that said, I still think Zhihou's hair is ugly. And this is really a conundrum. Why does no one recognise Zhihou's grandpa? I thought he was, like, the ex-President or something. Why does nobody recognise the president just because he puts on a doctor's coat? I have never been able to figure it out. Ooh lol and Zhihou looks passably male with his new haircut. But it could be better. Ew oh no I think this episode is the beginning of angst. Like we won't have happiness between Sicao and Junbiao all the way until the last 5 minutes of the last episode or something. And would you believe it, at the end of the series THEY DON'T EVEN GET MARRIED?! At least at the end of Hana Yori Dango there's a finale where they get married and live happily ever after, albeit in a very disturbing ceremony with a hot priest. Which shouldn't be allowed. Not that they shouldn't be allowed to get married, that hot people shouldn't be allowed to be priests. You know my feelings on this. Hmm oh Sec 4 Farewell! It was, uh, quite fail. This year's Sec 4 batch is damn vicious can. We played dog and bone, knockout. Sec 1s won Sec 2s so we made them play against the Sec 4s, but they lost like 0-a whole lot. O: Tsk tsk and juniors should be young and energetic! And embarrassingly for them, all the Sec 4s' points were scored by Cheryl. Who is a self-confessed baika. So anyway since the whole point of Sec 4 Farewell is to bully Sec 4s, we said to them: "We're bushuang that you won, so we're going to let the Sec1s decide what to do to you." CRAFTY EH. If they'd lost (which we'd actually expected, sigh) we'd have gone all "HAHA WE SHALL MAKE YOU DO WHAT THE SEC1s WANT AS A FORFEIT." While the sec1s huddled together and discussed (omg so bonded! we're proud of you guys, sec1s!) the Sec4s grabbed the bottles of soft drinks nearby, shook them really hard, and pointed them at us. "Eh juniors, if you do anything to us, we'll..." they indicated the bottles in a very mean tone. WALAU. Anyway some Sec2s put up a valiant anti-terror attack on them and attempted to grab the bottles, but they got sprayed because the Sec4s loosened the caps, and when you loosen the cap on a bottle of fizzy drink which has been shaken quite vigorously... you know what happens. It ended up with the Sec4s seizing control. "Juniors, now the sec4s bushuang already. We want all of you to stand in a line and spell 'Audio Visual/Public Address', including the slash. WITH YOUR BUTTS." Annoying. But we were saved by the pizza, which Cheryl and I didn't even get to eat because we rushed up to the control room to meet Mr Lee, thinking he was pissed at us. He was supposed to fetch us to Macpherson to get the jacket sample from the printer, but at the last minute his paranoia/fatherly instincts kicked in and expressly banned us from going D: So we got neither pizza nor a look at the jacket. (Now this is completely unrelated, but WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE SUCH A BAD IMPRESSION OF INDUSTRIAL ESTATES. Going to an industrial estate doesn't mean you'll get raped or plundered or kidnapped lor please. Especially with a senior who punches before asking questions, and a male teacher to chaperone. I mean, EVERYONE works in industrial estates. Everyone who can't afford the rental on a place in Shenton Way works in an industrial estate. And not everyone who can't afford sky high rentals needs to resort to kidnapping kids to afford rent.)

haze
Monday, August 10, 2009
I HATE THE HAZE. IT STINKS. Oh I just realised that I have a lot of posts starting with the letter 'H'. Due mostly to Hana Yori Dango and other Hana Yori Dango-related characters whose (awesome) surnames start with 'H'. But that's unrelated. I can smell the haze. Everywhere. Even the toilet, where I've escaped to because there's this cute little air freshener block there. BUT IT APPARENTLY DOESN'T WORK ON HAZE. So I get to smell a mix of, um, "spring floral" and BURNING TREES FROM INDONESIA. Crabby. I would turn on the aircon but my mum is afraid of catching my germs. Anyway about National Day Celebrations. Hm. We went back to Rosyth but we weren't let in, thanks to... nevermind. Some annoying fat people really just ought to quit the school for the benefit of everyone in there. And for those who want to return, for that matter. We ought to stage a hunger strike, with nothing but glucose water :D And then we all dutifully trooped off to Kester's house for Wii and mahjong. Wheee.

AHHH FEVER GRAWL In an attempt to get rid of my drowsiness I went on a tea drinking marathon. Because tea contains caffeine, and caffeine perks you up in the morning when you feel like a zombie. Right?! ...Wrong. Now I have a killer sore throat (possibly from ingesting too much tea) and I still feel wonky. I am not a happy camper. More Gilbert Goh in the forum today. Today he's advising people on how to run a marathon in a snarky (which he probably thinks is sympathetic) tone. He was offering his condolences to the members of the late Mr Calvin Lee and basicaly giving out his godly advice to the rest of the world. Um, who died and made him an expert? Uh, please don't answer "Mr Calvin Lee" to the above. It was rhetorical. Why does he keep writing in to the forum? Doesn't he have anything better to do? Like pop virtual bubble wrap or something. More importantly, why does MyPaper keep publishing his letters?! Gosh I feel incoherent. I can't find that nice panel of icons that usually appear when you go to Blogger D: I get this weird html-typeface thing which annoys me D: Gosh did I just say that? Nonono I am supposed to be making friends with code. Seeing as we have some NSC thing coming up in like, a month, and I've probably forgotten everything from NOI except that you start with... with... #include stdio.h? I think. Dammit, time to dig out notes :/

grammar
The fact that I never really got my head around passive and active sentences has come back to bite me in the ass with a venegance. In P4 English we made fun of the worksheets that were given to us on this topic and renamed them affectionately "Indirect kissing and retarded speech using 'old'". (The actual name was something like "Indirect and reported speech using 'told'") And so I never really figured out the difference between active or passive voice. But it didn't really matter to me, as long as whatever I said sounded coherent. And I guess it did, most of the time. But in Jap we're currently covering the horror that is passive voice, and I CAN NEVER TELL WHEN TO USE ACTIVE VOICE OR PASSIVE VOICE. The only reason I managed to pass the last exam was because the section on passive voice basically told us to convert every sentence shown below in to passive voice, so I mechanically converted them and still got some wrong. Sidenote: Does anyone know a good way to overcome drug-induced drowsiness? I'd thought sleeping for like 12 hours would do the trick, but it apparently didn't. :/

the horror
Tuesday, August 04, 2009
Oh, the horror. Today's forum page, with the exception of an explanatory letter, is a medley of whiny letters from those people who fancy themselves highly opiniated and write in to the forum an average of about 5 times a week. Nelson Quah, Raymund Koh Joo Guan, Ace Kindred Cheong, David Soh, Gilbert Goh, Sebastian Tan. I tell you, if there were a Whine-lympics, these people would come in tops. LOL today Nelson Quah came up with an amazing idea to reduce taxi fare cheats. Instead of paying by the meter, we ought to pay an estimated fare first! Whoopee! Yeah, they do this to tourists all the time in other countries. It's called ridiculously overpriced cab fare. Genius. Raymund Koh is once again whining about infrastructure. Ace Kindred Cheong is whining about not being unpatriotic. David Soh's letter is a classic Chinese baozhangbaodao: Blame the govt for every nitty gritty thing that's wrong with society and whine about having to pay fines for eating on trains and stuff. And then insist that the govt step up education programmes in school so we can "treat the root of the problem". Sound like a Chinese essay? Yeah, I thought so too. Gilbert Goh is getting more and more schizo by the day. He's sharing tips on how to survive unemployment. Somehow I don't think his tips are really trustworthy, considering how he writes in every alternate day to whine "Why can't I get a job? Gosh I need a job. Govt please get me a job." You know, if he spent less time sitting around writing forum letters as opposed to say, upgrading his skills, he'd probably have a job by now. Gosh, and I totally did not need to know his tastes in music/how much he emos/his weak defense for not actively seeking a job. Teehee and this is really funny. At first he says that you ought to seek solitude when you're upset about not having a job, and then later he says that you out to talk it out with someone because "people are not meant to live in solitude". I think he's been doing too much "talking it out" lately though. Not everyone who reads the forum wants to know what "ABBA's Dancing Queen never fails to work its magic on me when I am feeling down" or that he can't get a job. And the points he brings up are somehow, basically just excuses for moping around and not getting a job. Sigh I really see why Mr Lee said that reading the forum pages depress him. And I have a heightened appreciation of Dr Sakhar's emails' sign offs. The one that goes "The best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter" or something. Not to be elitist, but honestly. Why are the forum pages so... urgh. This might be kinda unrelated, but it kind of sucks being young and in a good school, because all your (coherent-er than yours) arguments are always dismissed on the pretexts of 1. RESPECT YOUR ELDERS!!!!! or 2. ELITIST!!!!!!! Hmm I ought to go back to sleep.

o.o
I took a nap after lunch expecting to sleep only for about an hour or two. The medicine knocked me out for FIVE. That is not a cough mixture. It is a sleeping draught, I tell you. Pure distilled mixture of sleeping pills and sleeping sickness. Yeah well I have a flu. The doctor can't tell which one it is and since I am apparently a low risk individual (ie no diabetes, not overweight [hello, despite what they say about that woman dying of H1N1 without any underlying conditions, I think being overweight is totally a condition. Face it, when you're fat, you die of anything much more easily. DUH.]) and so I get to be packed home with a 3-DAY-MC. Why so kiamsiap! 3 days nia! Everyone else gets 7. Not that I'm complaining la. This means I'll be -ahem- certified well enough to go back to Rosyth on Friday. (:

intellectual discussions
Sunday, August 02, 2009
Yesterday's dinner with the instructors was quite fun :D Um, I mean intellectual. I realise I can never actually be really sure who exactly is reading my blog since NO ONE EVER TAGS D: Therefore I shall talk in euphemisms from now on. :D Yeah anyway Keyun and I were loitering around City Hall and were probably on the verge of being arrested by the numerous armed policemen who were hanging around there too when the instructors came, so we all went over to Suntec. And then we ordered pizza and had, uh, intellectural conversations. On various intellectual subjects. On the identity of a menu item: "What's a butternut?" "Oh a butternut pumpkin is a kind of pumpkin." "Yeah." On the taste of abovementioned pumpkin soup: "THIS IS FISH CURRY." "But it's supposed to be pumpkin soup?" "Well it's fish curry. The kind you get at roti prata shops." -fish curry/pumpkin soup is passed around and everyone gets a spoonful of it- "WTF it really IS fish curry." "Gosh, I never knew you could make fish curry out of pumpkins. I must tell my mum." On kids: "I hate kids. They're generally okay to manage, until they realise they can bite." "Well when they realise they can bite, you realise you can kick them in the face." "Kids generally are very good at sensing who's about to destroy them." "You don't have to destroy all the kids. Just like that Chinese proverb says, you just have to destroy one and the rest will shut up." "In MRTs, I always feel like grabbing those kids who scream and run by their legs and smashing them into a pillar." "You could always just glare at the parents." "But sometimes they just ignore you. Or they're not there." "Well then there's no conflict! If they're there, you glare at them and count on them to shut the kid up. If they're not there, you can just destroy the kid anyway and he'll have no one to complain to!" On the National Day song: "What does it sound like?" "No one actually knows. The tune changes every stanza. The only thing that's constant is 'what do you see.'" "So how do you sing it?" "If you're tone deaf, you can actually sing it pretty well." Yeah anyway I discovered that the curriculum that our school admin now calls the hoity-toity "Raffles Programme" hasn't changed since forever. Everyone did Merchant of Venice in Sec 2. :/
