c. elegans
Sunday, September 30, 2012
Me:
Slimming is a good thing what.
Or maybe a tapeworm is living in your stomach
Wei Jie Loke:
I wish
Then can nom forever without getting fat!
And they don't bite
Me:
Nooo! That would be scary
Really? But lots of better pets don't bite too
Furry puppies > tapeworms
Wei Jie Loke:
Where do I get tapeworm eggs?
I heard at RGS canteen noodle stall
Me:
HAHAHA
No, that's just oil
You may find insect bits at the rice stall, though it's more of cockroach legs than tapeworm eggs
And tapeworms are ugly
Wei Jie Loke:
Aiya maybe try enough times might jackpot
Me:
But owners eventually start looking like their pets
Do you want to look like a tapeworm?
Wei Jie Loke:
It's not a pet!
It'll be... A slimming service
Someday in the near future
Me:
Eeeeeeeeee!!
I'm pretty sure there are side effects associated with tapeworms
Wei Jie Loke:
I thought everyone has worms in their gut
Just how many
And how long
Me:
I thought that's just bacteria. Gut flora. Not gut worms ):
Oh hmm C. elegans hahahahaha
Wei Jie Loke:
Ooooh
Me:
Ooh you could market that as a slimming service
"Celegans. For an elegant figure"
Wei Jie Loke:
Quite cool! Lemme go research
--
I don't think C. elegens lives in our gut though. Haha fail BioRA students xD

piano guys are hot
Saturday, September 29, 2012
They say this is why you shouldn't date a musician: because his instrument will always be his first love. Okay but this is seriously too adorable. Squeee!!!! Oh how I wish I were a cello.
Also Yiwye says cellists are super sexy.
I'll always be more of a piano/violin person though. :P Piano guys > violin guys; violin should be played by girls in a duet because it's the cuter instrument HAHA. Plus I don't have enough strength for chords.
Incidentally, this is what this new obsession of mine is called: ThePianoGuys!!! Though they also play the cello (man, what gives?? Too much talent in one person!) They have this other video where they play OneDirection's "Secrets" with themes from Beethoven's 5th. It is so beautiful I teared while watching the video. SEARCH IT SEARCH IT. Oh what the hell I'll just put it here so you lazybums can enjoy music. Good music must be shared, yes?
Also, their cinematography is heavenly. If there's one thing to gripe about Anderson and Roe, it is that their filming is a bit strange. But this looks like the opening scene of some movie with dragons and lovely flying things.
Sigh haha am happy :) "Don't only practise your art, but force your way into its secrets, for it and knowledge and raise men to the divine." -Ludwig van Beethoven.
Doesn't that sound like a KI question?

Gosh, there is NO POINT in trying to be calm and rational at all because it hardly gets your point across and it opens you up to stupid ad hominem attacks. Again KI has ruined me because if not for KI I would be screaming and shouting and throwing things now but for the sake of my training I must stay calm and take this crap in my stride???
I think if I make it through tonight without breaking anything I should get a Nobel Peace Prize or SOMETHING. What the hell, man, what the hell.

nora 2010
Thursday, September 27, 2012
From a post in 2010:
Assembly today was pretty fun. I spent half the period sitting outside being sad, because the Sec 3 SS teachers colonized our room and used it to have Confidential SSPT Discussions. And then we got let back in, and I spent the rest of the block being childish with Mr Lim. It is remarkably therapeutic. And then I went home because I was sick. This little squirrel has got the sniffles. (Y) at Doll's House, btw. I think I totally lack that quality which Ms Picca was talking about, which allows Nora to define her individualism but prevents Hedda from doing so. So instead of fighting it and trying to manipulate people like Hedda does, I think I shall just wait to marry a rich guy and become a Bukit Timah taitai, and then do all sorts of pretty tricks, and the skylark shall sing all day long.
Well, at least I am somewhat consistent...

bandung
Went to Bandung for the past 3 or 4 days! :D It was amazing fun and I kinda sorta lived like a local; took an angkot and ate street food and didn't get diarrhea!!! My mum scoffs and says it's nothing, because Bandung is cleaner than Jakarta, and she will never let me forget that when I went there when I was 1, I got food poisoning so bad I had to go to hospital. ._.
But my stomach is stronger now! Batagor is daaaamn good.
And the factory outlets, oh goodness me. I told Tomo I finally understood why he was always wearing branded polo tees (I thought he was rolling in money, wth. I mean yeah he probably IS, but yknow.) He laughed. But yeah FACTORY OUTLETS HAVE STUFF FROM ZARA AND TOPSHOP and even some Juicy Couture at some places!!! Squee happiness.
Anyway I need to learn how to speak Bahasa!!! We are all super dependent on Pa because he's the only one with a modicum of Bahasa ability. In addition he still has Rp. 100 notes, which are worth about less than 1c in SGD. They don't make Rp. 100 notes anymore. They make it in coins. Which weigh about 1g.

Got back H3 today. I was expecting- well, hoping- for 70, but no. Gah I always miss by a bit for Chem and that's so infuriating. Still I guess it's okay. Hoping for the bell curve, which is never a good strategy because you never really know WHERE YOU ARE on the bell curve. Like Mr Tan said: "What if the test is so easy that everyone gets 99? Then the person who gets 98.5 gets Ungraded!!" Sob sob.
--
A sobering reminder to be thankful. I am, honest, but I don't want to let go yet. We still have such a long way to go. And I am not ready to stand on my own. To be honest I don't think I will ever be. And I am so frightened.

AND my email and blogger account got hacked ): I've changed my password and such. I thought it was perhaps a phising attempt but no it looks like someone really accessed my account and then deleted all the spam emails from my sent box so I can't send apologetic emails djfkajsgjsd. Displeased.

NAG-NAM-5TYLE
Friday, September 21, 2012
We are getting back Pharm Chem papers next Thursday! Thankfully I'll be back by then, so I can collect my paper myself and can hide my marks if necessary. Sigh. I really hope the old standby of reproducing-the-entire-page-from-the-textbook-if-you-have-no-idea-what's-going-on works, at least for the Medicinal Chem questions.
Before the paper I was so desperate I just plugged in to My Chemical Romance and listened to Bulletproof Heart on repeat while trying to commit all the Medchem sections to memory. Perhaps, someday, Chem will love me back? -hopeful smile-
Also, (I am stealing Bang's joke here) you know you are screwed when you see "NAG-NAM-5", which is the polysaccharide used in construction of bacterial cell walls, as "GANGNAM". (hur hur hur NAG-NAM-5TYLE) When I read that on my newsfeed about 10 mins before we packed up to go to the exam, everyone was at the stage where you've crammed just a little too much info into your brain and other important stuff (i.e. sanity) is starting to leak out, and we found it hilarious. Except Weijie, because he had NEVER HEARD GANGNAM STYLE BEFORE :O :O :O :O :O
Gasp. The Chorale kid.
Anyway he came up with some screwed up mnemonic to remember the mode of action of sulfonamides: "You just need to remember how the dinosaurs died! They died because of volcanic eruptions- and volcanoes contain sulfur, right, so SULFonamides- killed all the pterodactyls and made them fall out of the sky- so it inhibits dihydroPTEROate synthase- and prevented them from spitting out their acidic spit- so 4-aminobenzoic ACID can't be converted to folic acid!!!"
I couldn't figure out how to pronounce dihydropteroate. It annoys me. I cannot pronounce pterodactyl either. People should spell things with more vowels and less consecutive consonants, but to exact my revenge I shall name all my future kids ptero-something to watch their teachers squirm when they call roll MUAHAHAHAHA.
Also we realised that "apoptosis" contained the "pt" sound, and can thus be pronounced eh-poh-to-sis, instead of eh-pop-to-sis. Somehow that was much funnier then, with more Medchem knowledge and less sanity.

son of ritz carlton
Today at ION Orchard, after the Chem MCQ paper, we took a walk around. Suddenly Yiwye gasped and said, "OMG guys, it's Mr (Paul) Cheong!!! Behind you!!!" We turned around, and it was Mr Cheong, in the Chanel make up store. Awesome fangirl moment.
Yiwye says he is the son of Ritz Carlton, and that is further supported by our sighting today, because dudeeeee Chanel is like, Expensive. Everything he was wearing is branded. Gucci loafers. And stuff.
Our whole class was kind of stunned and stood around giggling and trying to decide what to do. We wanted to greet him really loudly and embarrass him, but mainly everyone just stood around texting people about the sighting. (It is still quite weird to see teachers outside of school. Like that time we saw Mr Tham at Chorale concert. He was quite awkward around us haha.)
Then Mr Cheong turned around and suddenly everyone scuttled and fled. The end.

cravats
Thursday, September 20, 2012
Haven't blogged in the longest time ever, but hey, it is busy trying to live the life of an Austenesque heroine. Look, a fan novel of Pride and Prejudice from Hark, a Vagrant (one of my absolute favourite webcomics, though being unschooled in History I don't always get what they are talking about but yeah.)
Mmm, cravats. :D
Anyway today I went out with Rachel and Crystal to take neoprints, and we stopped by Kinokuniya to browse through books for fun. It was utterly depressing to see the wave of porno books that has swept through the bookshop. After Twilight, suddenly every other novel was about brooding vampires. Then came 50 Shades of Gray, and now all sorts of novels not even pretending to be original ("Eighty Days Yellow", please- that sounds like someone fed 50 Shades of Gray through Google Translate or something) and utterly TERRIBLE in descriptions.
Rachel had fun reading out passages from the books.
There was an Austen fanfic- somewhat in the canon of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", but a highly sexualised version of P&P. The blurb on the back was very disturbing. I much prefer the HaV version, heh.

Oh crap I am turning into a pig- sleep eat repeat. Flu medicines are making me hungry and super drowsy but I don't really understand how I can be hungry when all I am doing is sleeping for like almost 17 hours a day.
I've eaten some Chubby Hubby but I AM STILL HUNGRY. If this carries on I won't just be Chubby Hubby but Obese... Pekingese. I can't think of anything to rhyme with -ese.

Austenesque
Wednesday, September 12, 2012
"Fiction enables us to escape to others' lives; when we read a Jane Austen novel we can pretend that we are the witty and beautiful heroine, about to fall in love with a charming and suave man. Life has a tendency to be dull and boring, especially if one is not an Austenesque heroine."
So I wrote in my KI essay. Somehow I doubt either of the teachers will appreciate what it is like to not be an Austenesque heroine, but it was worth a try. Still, I take back what I said about life being dull and boring- we discovered today that we'd printed the wrong index number on our IS, so immediately after the KI paper Deenie and I dashed up to the library to reprint.
The library coms have a tendency to not work properly, so we turned on about 6 computers at one time and flapped anxiously about while begging them to WORK, PLEASE WORK. Finally we got 2 terminals to work, and sent our documents to the printer. We had a mini competition to see whose stuff would print first, but because I'd logged in on my account Deenie had to wait for me HAHA.
While the ISes printed, Deenie stayed around to wait for them, while I went down to beg the photocopy ladies. Horror of horrors; the plate on the door read "Closed", but they were still inside and I begged them piteously with every ounce of whine I could muster. They were SO NICE! They threatened to leave, but I begged and whined and said it was a matter of life and death and they rolled their eyes and put down their bags and helped us. So yeah Deenie if we do well for KI must TREAT THEM TO LUNCH or awfully chocolate cupcakes or something!!!
Then after that we rushed to the staff room, only to discover that they'd CLOSED, since 430!!!! Luckily at that moment, Mr Julian Tan came out of the toilet and I was so desperate I couldn't be bothered about shame anymore and I begged him to let us in. Mr Tan is again SUPER NICE he let us in and even wished us good luck and asked what an IS was.
So we tumbled into the staff room, gasping for breath, as we signed our forms using the pen they have there for people to write their teachers' names on homework. We tried to fold a piece of paper around our ISes, but it was such a huge stack that we stapled a lot of paper together to create an impromptu binding. But we were so clumsy about it I think it was quite judgeworthy haha.
In the end we finally accomplished everything, and this concludes the Adventure of the IS Submission. Still not a witty and statuesque heroine but that's close enough :)

Mr. Booth returned our IS proposals today, and I finally printed and bound my IS! On a happy sidenote he said to me as he was returning the proposals, "Have you lost weight, Vicky?" I think it's the not-having-seen-someone-for-a-long-time effect, but it still made me happy YAY. On a sombre tone, everytime he sees me he says that, so if I'm not careful he might report me for anorexia or something soon.
So yeah. It's a nice feeling, holding something you've written. Somehow the line from Hedda Gabler 2 years ago surfaced: "Now I'm burning your child, Thea! With your curly hair!" and I repeated it to myself about 5 times. Not that I wanted to burn my manuscript. But it felt fun.
So on Wednesday I shall hand it in, perhaps with vine leaves in my hair.

Rachel dug up Justin's old blog and we had this reminiscing session. I went to re-read all the comments (back then, we had to comment with our names, none of this anonymity that you youngsters have nowadays) and gosh, we were such bitches.
Not only did we type in eye-painful short forms, we bitched about people openly online- always preceding our comments with "No offence, but..." Always the perfect gentlemen and gentlewomen.
Also Justin's later blogs got targetted by spammers, some of whom set the stage for the development of our later personalities. "Bimbola" was, well, a bimbo lah, and every single sentence of hers was peppered liberally with "like". We've always suspected that it was Edward's sister in RG at that time. Bimbo was part of RG culture more than it was of Rosyth culture.
And Nikki. Nikki appeared suddenly in P5 as part of an advertising campaign to promote use of condoms while otherwise engaging in unsafe sex practices (ahem. Abstinence, my dears. Abstinence, Being faithful, Condoms. Easy as ABC.) and a persona named Nikki would regale Justin's blog with random updates about her nails and too-short miniskirts. Earlier today Rachel was speculating about the identity of Nikki, so I went to look at her posts again, and with a sinking sense of dread I realised that I might have been the Nikki persona ._. At least, I felt a sense of deja vu reading her posts; I'm not sure if that stemmed from my reading her posts so many times (the spammers were our daily entertainment then) or because I actually wrote them. I think it was part of a collaboration between Rachel and Crystal and I actually- I would be bored enough but I wouldn't have the guts to start it, and in one of her comments "Nikki" mentioned that she was "moving to Geylang Lorong 7 because they... installed CCTVs on the even-numbered lorongs". That is the sort of fun fact/current affairs thing that only Crystal would know.
Sigh. I'm writing this with a fever, so I'm not sure if my brain just made up a few memories and lumped them together, or if I have really recalled a major life event. Meep. ):

Sigh
Tuesday, September 04, 2012
Me: "Mum, I'm a bit stressed out about scholarships and stuff! I'm worried that I won't get it."
Mum: "I haven't seen lah... Don't cry."
Me: "Yeah, I know, I mustn't give up hope and all, but it's so hard! And I'm not crying."
Mum: "Slowly..."
Me: "It's so darn tedious sometimes!"
Mum: "Yah I know, wait don't cry..."
Me: "I'm not cryi-"
Mum: "Yay! Look! There's your water!"
Me: "MUM WERE YOU TALKING TO SWAMPY (from Where's My Water) THIS WHOLE TIME??"
Mum: "Yah! Look! He keeps crying because there's no water! So cute hor!"

At NLB this morning I espied 2 girls dressed in Rosyth pinafore skipping gaily and talking loudly about something. Being their senior I obviously decided to stalk them to see what they were up to.
When we got into the lift, a bunch of 3 AC kids got in, and one boy said hi to the girls.
AC boy 2: "Eh, how do you know those girls?"
AC boy 1: "I only know one of them."
AC boy 2: "Well, how do you know her?"
Rosyth girl: "Oh, he calls me EVERY DAY."
I retold this to Crystal and she was horrified that they had, in her words, "not carried on our fine tradition of ignoring them," and also, "WHAT ARE THE ROSYTH GUYS DOING??"
Me: "Not like our batch did super well themselves either."
Crystal: "But at least we were reasonably incestuous and didn't cross pollinate!!!"
I'm not sure if that's a good thing actually haha. Encourages speciation, but if the environment changes we're all screwed thanks to a minute gene pool.

Adorable friends
I have the most adorable friends ever-
RachelTan: "Vic, do you think it'd be possible for someone to hide in the library past closing time? And then stay there overnight."
Me: "Um, they'd probably chase you out..."
RachelTan: "...I think I'd want to try that after As. Where they can't do anything to me."
Me: "They could withhold your A Level cert."
RachelTan: "No, because they I'd never leave the library, and I'd sneak in every night and turn all the tables upside down and they'd have to put it back in the library. So if they don't give me my A Level cert they'll never get rid of me. And then I'd have all the time in the world to read all the books and I'd become a book expert and be able to tell you exactly where every piece of info is in every book, and where every book is."
--
Yuhui: "I was talking to myself in my head last night, and I said to myself, 'talking to yourself is the first sign of madness,' and I instinctively thought: 'shut up!!'"

My stress mechanism kicks in at awkward times: when I don't have to study I am super on the ball about clearing homework and I turn in all my essays 2 weeks in advance. But faced with a huge pile of work and college apps I am instead watching Toddlers and Tiaras, which is about the most brainless show ever and not very good for my project to Become Less Whiny and a Deeper Person.

I've blogged about Anderson and Roe and how much I love them before, but I was just fangirling to Jie about them, so I was reminded of this.
Forgotten how much I loved this song :,) Love the bass notes around 2:00 amigawd.
Also, since I was listening to piano, I also went to listen to the Totoro theme song (another song I haven't heard in a long time). Yay! I am filled with happiness and love and the magic of childhood and Totoros :))))
On a sidenote, does anyone else think that Anderson looks like Robert Pattinson?
Gah I am so annoyed. A&R are coming to Singapore, but on the EVE OF KI!!!!! @£@(!£@*!(£%*($@) I am super displeased oh dear.
